the carving in this before and after was inspired by hugo guinness. i've been looking at his images non-stop this week and decided to pay homage on this piece.
I have a question about how you deal with bad veneer like on the desk above. I have a lovely old wood dresser that I would like to refinish or paint, but portions of the veneer are peeling up, cracked, or missing. What is the next step? Remove part or all of the veneer? Sand down the bad parts? Replace the damaged portions, then paint? Thanks for any help you can give me!
on this one i was able to scrape all the veneer off with a putty knife and a hammer. sometimes it's really glued on there and it's difficult to get it all off without gouging the wood. if that is the case i either use wood puddy to even out the surface, or sand down the remaining veneer. use your judgement- refinishing old furniture is personal!
